Newton County Academy split a quartet of games this past week on the baseball diamond.
The Generals opened the week with a 7-5 win over Leake on Tuesday and then beat East Rankin 13-7 on Friday. The Generals then traveled to Columbus where they lost a pair of time-limit games, falling 5-0 to Heritage and 4-3 to Lee Academy.
The Generals, now 4-3 on the season, will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Waynesboro. The Generals will then travel to Lamar on Thursday and host the Raiders on Friday.
NCA 7, Leake 5
The Generals scored all of their runs in the last two innings as they beat the Rebels for the second time in four days.
Leake scored two in the third and fifth and one in the fourth and led 5-0 after five innings. NCA then scored four in the sixth and three in the seventh to take the win.
NCA outhit Leake 6-5 in the contest. Kemp Alderman was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Jacob Smith was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and five RBIs. Hayden West walked three times and scored two runs. Hays West walked twice and scored two runs.
Hayden West pitched 3 2/3 finings and gave up three runs on two hits and three walks. striking out 10. Hays West came pitched the final 3 1/3 innings in relief and picked up the win as he gave up two runs on three hits and two walks. striking out five.
NCA 13, East Rankin 7
The Generals took another win over a Class 4A team as they took a six-run win over the Patriots on Friday.
NCA started quick with three in the first and five in the second to go up 8-0. East Rankin then scored three in the third and fourth innings to pull within 8-6. After each team scored one run in the sixth, NCA scored four runs in the seventh.
NCA outhit East Rankin 13-6 in the game. Kemp Alderman was 2-for-3 with a home run, was hit twice, scored four runs and had three RBIs. Jacob Smith was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Hays West was also 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Hayden Wall and Harber Reese each single and drove in two runs. Jax Porter and Hayden West each scored two runs.
Austin Upton pitched three innings and gave up four runs on three hits and four walks. striking out five. Porter pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up two runs on a hit and three walks. Wall pitched the last 3 1/3 innings and gave up one run on two hits. striking out two.
Heritage 5, NCA 0
In a matchup of Division I signees, the Patriots took advantage of three errors and five walks in a time-limit win.
Heritage scored all five of its runs in the second inning. Each team had three hits in the four-inning contest. Hays West, Kemp Alderman and Hayden West each had singles for the Generals.
Kemp Alderman took the loss, giving up five runs, only one earned on three hits and five walks. striking out seven.
Heritage’s Blayze Berry gave up three hits and struck out six to pick up the win.
Lee 4, NCA 3
The Colts scored two in the fifth to take a one-run win over the Generals in a five-inning, time-limit game on Saturday.
NCA scored two in the first on a double by Jacob Smith that scored Kemp Alderman and Hayden West. Lee answered with two runs in the second to tie the score. NCA took the lead back in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Alderman. Lee then scored two in the top of the fifth to take the win.
NCA had just two hits with Alderman’s home run and Smith’s double.
Hayden West pitched all five innings and took the loss for the Generals, giving up four runs, only one earned on six hits and four walks. striking out seven.
