The Newton County baseball team split four games last week on the baseball diamond.
The Cougars grabbed a pair of one-run wins as they beat Northeast Lauderdale 9-8 on Tuesday and Union 4-3 on Friday. Then on Saturday, the Cougars lost 10-0 to Stringer and Neshoba Central.
Newton County, now 3-3, will return to play on Tuesday as they host Scott Central and will host Southeast Lauderdale on Friday. The Cougars will finish off the week with a 3 p.m. contest at Neshoba Central
Newton County 9, Northeast Lauderdale 8
The Cougars scored four run-in the last two innings to take a come-from-behind win over the Trojans on Tuesday.
Newton County scored two in the first and fourth. Northeast scored four in the fourth and fifth innings and led 8-5 after five innings. County then scored two in the sixth and seventh. The Cougars scored the game winner on a bases-loaded single by Marcus Mowdy with one out.
Newton County outhit Northeast 8-3 in the contest. Justin Davis was 2-for-3. David Burton had a solo home run and scored two runs. Tyson Wood, Tyler Cavenaugh and Griffin Bailey each singled and scored a run. Tucker Fitch walked twice and also scored a run.
Jesse Phillips started on the mound and pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up four unearned runs on three walks and a hit striking out eight. Justin Davis pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up four runs on two walks and two hits. Cavenaugh pitched the final 2 2/3 innings without giving up a hit and striking out five to pick up the win.
Newton County 4, Union 3
The Cougars took a one-run win in a pitching duel on Friday night.
County scored two in the first and third innings. Union scored one in the first and two in the third.
Union outhit County 5-2 in the contest. Rope Lovern was 2-for-3 for Union. Jaylon Buckley singled and drove in a run. Tyler Cavenaugh was 2-for-2 to lead County at the plate. Davis Lovern scored two runs.
Marcus Mowdy pitched all seven innings for Newton County as he gave up three runs on five hits and two walks. striking out eight.
Buckley pitched all seven innings for Union, giving up four unearned runs on two hits and two walks. striking out six.
Stringer 10, Newton County 0
The Cougars only had two hits as they dropped a run-rule loss to the Red Devils on Saturday at Union.
Stringer scored two runs in the first, on win the fourth and seven in the fifth.
Gage Hollingsworth and Tyler Cavenaugh had County’s only two hits.
Hollingsworth pitched the first two innings and gave up two unearned runs on three hits. Tyson Wood then pitched the next 2 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on one hit and four walks. Jesse Phillips gave up the last three runs without getting an out.
Neshoba Central 10, Newton County 0
The Cougars had just one hit as they suffered another run-rule loss on Saturday.
Neshoba scored one in the first, six in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Neshoba outhit Newton County 11-1 in the contest as Gage Hollingsworth had the Cougars only hit.
