The injuries keep piling up for the Newton County Academy Generals and so do the losses.
The Generals lost two more players to injury last week as Wayne took a 40-7 win on Friday night.
The Generals fall to 2-2 on the season and have lost two in a row.
“It was another tough week,” NCA coach Rob Roberts said. “We lost two more lineman and that really hurt us. Harber Reese and Jacob Smith both went down and that left us thin up front. We only had six linemen going into the game and had to put a lineman’s jersey on another player. I didn’t think that we played bad in the first half, they just hit us with a couple of big plays.”
Wayne got the ball to start the game and went 65 yards in 10 plays as they scored on a 15-yard run with 7:46 left in the first period.
The Generals then gave the ball right back to Wayne as Colby Hollingsworth fumbled, giving the Jaguars the ball at the NCA 32.
It only took two plays as the Wayne quarterback scored on a 17-yard keeper with 6:29 left in the first for a 14-0 Jaguar lead.
After an NCA punt, Wayne went 90 yards in six plays, scoring on a 76-yard pass over the middle with 22.7 seconds left in the first period. The PAT failed and Wayne led 20-7
The Generals put together their best drive of the game on the ensuing possession as they went 61 yards in nine plays as Zander Meeks hit Hayden West on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 8:56 left in the first half. West booted the PAT and Wayne led 20-7, a score that held until the half.
“We didn’t play that bad, we just gave up some big plays with some kids on the field who haven’t played a lot,” Roberts said. “We’ve got six high schoolers on the sidelines in crutched. I’m having to dress out eighth graders and have got two ninth graders on the field. We are just thin right now and hope we can get through these next two weeks without getting someone hurt.”
The Jaguars added three second-half scores, including one interception return for a touchdown.
Kemp Alderman led the NCA defense with 12 tackles while Colby Hollingsworth had 10 tackles. Jordan Mason had eight stops while Trey Terrell and Lee Hollingsworth each had seven tackles apiece. Jacob Smith, Hayden West, Hayden Wall, Zach Evans and Wesley Williams each had five tackles apiece while 62 had four stops.
