The Newton County Cougars opened the season by splitting a pair of games on Saturday.
The Cougars opened the season with a 12-1 win over Leake Central and then lost an 11-6 contest to Neshoba Central. Newton County (1-1) on the season, returned to play Tuesday, travelling to Northeast Lauderdale. County will then play a pair of games on Saturday at Union as they will take on Stringer at 1:30 p.m. and Neshoba Central at 4 p.m.
County 12, Leake Central 1
The Cougars banged out nine hits and drew six walks as they opened the season with a run-rule win over the Gators on Saturday.
County scored four runs in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth inning.
County had nine hits in the contest as David Burton was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Justin Davis was 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Tucker Fitch had a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Gage Hollingsworth had two RBIs. R.K. Cain doubled and drew two walks. Tanner Dailey also scored three runs.
Marcus Mowdy pitched all five innings and gave up one run on two hits. striking out seven.
Neshoba Central 11, County 6
The Rockets scored eight runs in the fourth inning and held on to take a five-run win in their second game of the day on Saturday.
Each team scored a single run in the first inning and County scored three in the second to lead 4-1 through three innings. Neshoba took the lead in the fourth with eight runs and added two more in the fifth. County added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
Neshoba outhit County 8-6 in the contest. Tucker Fitch was 2-for-3 and scored two runs for the Cougars. Justin Davis and Griffin Bailey each singled and drive runs for the Cougars.
Tyler Cavenaugh started for the Cougars and pitched three innings, giving up five runs on four hits . striking out three. Tyson Wood pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up four runs. Davis came in and pitched 2 2/3 of an inning and game up two runs on one hit and one walk whiles striking out two. Jesse Phillips pitched the last inning, giving up just one hit.
