The Newton County Lady Cougars improved to 5-1 on the season as they grabbed a pair of wins in the West Harrison Tournament last week.
County opened the week with an 8-7, eight-inning, walk-off win over Long Beach and then pounded Stone County 15-2 on Saturday to finish out the week.
Newton County will return to action on Friday, March 13, as they will play a pair of games in the Enterprise Tournament at 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
After spring break, County will open division play, as they travel to Mendenhall on Tuesday, March 17. County will then host Mendenhall on Friday, March 20.
County 15, Stone County 2
The Lady Cougars exploded for eight runs in the first inning and took a five-inning, run-rule win over Tomcats at the West Harrison Tournament.
After going up 8-0 in the first, County added three in three in the third and four in the fourth.
County outhit stone 8-5 and took advantage of seven walks and four errors. Lizzy Hollingsworth was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Lorren Ivey had a double and drove in four runs. Lanie Phillips walked three times and scored four runs. Brelie Phillips was 2-for-3. Katelyn Gipson had three RBIs. Katelyn Jackson scored three runs. Alex Weir walked twice, stole two bases and scored two runs.
Ivey started on the mound and pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three. Mackenzie Rigdon pitched the final three innings and gave up two runs on five hits and struck out two.
County 8, Long Beach 7
The Lady Cougars got a walk-off single from Casey Dube and took a one-run win over Long Beach on Friday night at the West Harrison Tournament.
Long Beach jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning. County scratched single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings and trailed 5-3 after five innings. Long Beach scored two in the sixth. County scored three in the sixth to trail 7-6 going to the seventh.
In the seventh, Katelyn Gipson reached when she was hit by a pitch. After stealing second, Gipson scored when Maeli Ben reach on an error by the shortstop with two outs to tie the game.
In the eighth, Jackson was placed at second in the International tie breaker. After Lanie Phillips and Lizzy Hollingsworth were walked, Dube singled to left field to give County the win.
County outhit Long Beach 11-10 in the contest. Ben was 3-for-4 in the contest and scored twice. Gipson was 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Hollingsworth and Ivey each doubled in the contest. Ben and Gipson each had two stolen bases in the game.
Mackenzie Rigdon started and pitched four innings, giving up five runs, only two earned, on seven hits. Hannah Chaney pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits and five walks. Natalie Lampton pitched 1 2/3 innings endgame up one hit and struck out two. Ivey got the last two outs to pick up the win.
