Both Newton County basketball teams were swept in a pair of contests last week.
On Tuesday, Newton County lost to Union for the third time this season as the Yellowjackets won 55-46 and the Lady Yellowjackets won 34-19.
On Friday night, Newton County lost both games to Puckett as the Wolves took a hard-fought 62-58 win while the Lady Wolves won 67-47.
Newton County will return to action this week as they host Philadelphia on Tuesday and travel to Union on Thursday. Newton County will return from the Christmas break and host Scott Central on Jan. 3
Union boys 55, County 46
The Cougars led early but couldn’t hold onto the lead as the Yellowjackets took a nine-point win on Tuesday.
Newton County led 16-9 at the end of the first period before Union outscored the Cougars 17-8 in the second to take a 26-24 lead at the half. Union pulled away, outscoring Newton County 17-10 in the third to lead 43-34 going into the fourth, where each team scored 12 points.
Jamarcus Jones led Union with 23 points while J.T. Vance had 14 points. Josiah Cleveland led newton County with 19 points while Jamaal Croft added 10 points.
Union girls 34, County 19
The Lady Yellowjackets pulled away in the last period and took a 15-point win over the Lady Cougars on Tuesday.
Union led 5-2 at the end of the first and 11-6 at the half. Union outscored County 8-7 in the third for a 19-13 lead going into the fourth. But Union outscored County 15-6 in the fourth to pull away and take the win.
Keirra Russell led Union with 23 points while Trinity Lamber had five and Madison Buckley added four.
Alyssa McMullan and Nahriah Brown each had six points for Newton County.
Puckett boys 62, County 58
The Wolves overcame a first-period deficit and held on to take a four-point win over the Cougars on Friday night.
Newton County led 15-9 at the end of the first before Puckett took the second period 20-14 to tie the game at 29-29 at the half. Puckett outscored County 16-15 in the third and 17-14 in the fourth to take the win.
Davion Hillie led Newton County with 18 points while Josiah Cleveland had 17 points. Miguel Evans and Jamaal Croft each had nine points while Donovan McCoy added five points.
Puckett girls 67, County 47
The Lady Wolves started fast and took a 20-point win over the Lady Cougars on Friday.
Puckett jumped out to a 21-9 lead at the end of the first and outscored County 17-11 in the second to take a 38-20 advantage into the half. County outscored Puckett 13-11 in the third to cut the lead to 49-33 going into the fourth. But Puckett took the fourth 17-14 to take the win.
Hannah Sullivan led Newton County with nine points while Remini Nickey had eight points. Nahriah Brown had seven points while Hannah McDougle added six points and Christaysia Denson chipped in five.
