After a slow start, the Newton County Lady Cougars are playing well at the right time.
The Lady Cougars opened up Division 5-4A play with a pair of wins, beating Mendenhall 55-33 and Florence 34-33.
The Cougars split a pair of games last week, beating Mendenhall 62-56 and falling 77-28 to Florence.
Newton County will host Richland on Tuesday and travel to Quitman on Friday.
County girls 34, Florence 33
The Lady Cougars held on to take a one-point win over the Lady Eagles.
County led 9-6 at the end of the first and 23-18 at the half. After each team scored six in the third, Florence outscored County 9-6 in the fourth for the final.
Keasja Wansley led County with 13 points while Jayden Mack had seven points.
Florence boys 77, County 28
The Eagles outscored the Cougars in every period as they took a 49-point win.
Josiah Cleveland led County with seven points while Miguel Evans added six points.
County girls 55, Mendenhall 33
The Lady Cougars start quick and outscored Mendenhall in every period to take a 22-point over the Lady Tigers.
Remini Nickey led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points while Christaysia Denson had 11 points. Hannah McDougle had seven points and Keasja Wansley added six.
County boys 62, Mendenhall 56
The Cougars overcame an early deficit and took a six-point win over the Tigers.
Josiah Cleveland led Newton County with 29 points while Jamaal Croft and Miguel Evans had 11 points. Davion Hillie also had 10 points.
