Despite heavy rain, Newton County was able to get in a pair of tennis matches last week.
Newton County lost 4-3 to Clinton and 5-2 to Madison Central in a doubleheader match at Mississippi College on Thursday.
Newton County is now 3-2 on the season and will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Jones County Junior College where they will take on Brookhaven and Stone County in a doubleheader match. After spring break, Newton County will host Northwest Rankin on Monday, March 16 and will then travel to Jackson Prep on Tuesday, March 17. On Friday, Newton County will head north as they will take on Lafayette County. On Saturday, Newton County will play another doubleheader as they will take Oxford and New Albany at Oxford.
Clinton 4, County 3
The Cougars lost a tight match with Class 6A Clinton on Thursday at Mississippi College.
Newton County lost both singles matches as Chris Chertkow lost 6-1, 6-0 on the boys side and Brenah Flint lost 6-1, 6-1 on the girls side.
In boys doubles, Clinton took both points as Lee Hill and Tate Baucum lost 7-6(3), 6-2 at the No. 1 spot and Donald Blake and Cole Tadlock lost 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls doubles, Lauren Addy and Josie Tullos won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Ava Espey and Marilyn Tullos won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Parker Chaney and Emily Stewart cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Madison Central 5, County 2
In the first session of a doubleheader on Thursday at Mississippi College, Madison Central took a 5-2 win over the Cougars.
In singles, Cade Cooley lost 6-1, 6-0 on the boys side. Alyssa McMullan lost 6-0, 6-0 on the girls side.
In boys doubles, Parker Chaney and Tate Baucum won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Cole Tadlock and Donald Blake lost 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls doubles, Lauren Addy and Josie Tullos lost 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. Ava Espey and Marilyn Tullos lost 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.

Newton County opened up division play with a shutout win over Leake Central in the previous week.
