Both Newton County powerlifting teams came away with division championships this past week.
The Newton County boys had 11 of 12 lifters advance to the Class 4A South State championship with five liftings winning their weight class.
“I’m proud of our guys,” coach Rob Roberts said. “They have worked extremely hard up until this point both during football workouts and powerlifting after school. Eleven of our 12 advanced and each one has areas that needs improvement if they hope to make it out next round. I have no doubt they will bust their tails to get it done. Most approach every day with a DMGB mentality.”
Finishing first in their division for Newton County was Garrett Loper (132-pound division), Logan Loper (148-pound division), Carlonte Walker (165-pound division), Carlois Walker (198-pound division) and Preston Garvin (308-plus pound division). Finishing second in their weight class for County was Kyren Wansley (114-pound division), Cade Mangum (123-pound division), Devon May (181-pound division), Jarvis Tucker (242-pound division) and Holder Usry (275-pound division). Finishing in third and advancing to regionals was Kyle Garrison (242-pound division).
