The Newton County Lady Cougars opened up the 2020 season with a pair of games this Saturday.
The Lady Cougars opened the season with a 4-0 loss to DeSoto Central but bounced back with a 9-8 extra-inning win over Germantown.
Newton County, now 1-1, has a full slate of games this week as they are schedule to host Neshoba Central on Tuesday. On Friday, county will host Northwest Rankin and will then play in the Union Tournament on Saturday in a pair of games.
Newton County 9, Germantown 8
The Lady Cougars scored a run in the eighth to take a walk-off win over Germantown on Saturday.
County led in the early innings, scoring two runs in the first and second innings to lead 4-0. Germantown answered with three runs in the top of the third to cut the score to 4-3. Germantown then scored one in the fourth and four in the fifth. County scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth to send the game to extra innings. County then scored in the bottom of the eighth.
County outhit Germantown 16-10 in the contest, led by Katelyn Gipson who was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Brelie Phillips was 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Alex Weir was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Casey Dube was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Lizzy Hollingsworth was 2-for-5. Lanie Phillips also scored two runs.
Mandarie Leach started on the mound and pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on three hits and three walks. Mackenzie Rigdon pitched two innings and gave up five runs on four hits and three walks. Lorren Ivey pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and gave up three hits and struck out nine to pick up the win.
DeSoto Central 4, Newton County 0
The Lady Cougars only managed two hits as they opened the season with a shutout loss on Saturday.
DeSoto scored one run in the third and fourth innings and two in the fifth.
DeSoto outhit Newton County 7-2 in the contest. Lanie Phillips and Lorren Ivey each had hits for the Lady Cougars.
Ivey started on the mound pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits and six walks. Mackenzie Rigdon pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and gave up two unearned runs on three hits.
