Newton only got to play one basketball game last week but they made it count.
After struggling through a difficult non-division schedule, both Newton teams opened up Division 6-2A play with wins last week.
The Lady Tigers took a hard-fought 41-26 win over Lake and the Tigers followed suit with a 60-40 win over the Hornets on Tuesday.
Newton’s other scheduled game with Philadelphia was postponed because of weather concerns. That game will be made up on Monday, Jan. 27.
Newton will return to action on Friday when the Tigers travel to Union. Newton will then play in the Bay Springs Tournament on Saturday to finish out the week.
Newton girls 41, Lake 26
In a defensive contest, the Lady Tigers finished each half strong as they took a 15-point win over the Lady Hornets.
Newton led 10-9 at the end of the first and outscored Lake 11-4 in the second to lead 21-13 at the half. After each team scored five points in the third period, Newton outscored Lake 15-8 in the fourth to take the win.
Newton only had three players score, led by Ja’Leah Hickmon with 20 points and Zia Shields with 16.
Laurel Breland led Lake with 10 points while Laneisha Palm had five points.
Newton boys 69, Lake 40
The Tigers built and early lead and put the game away in the third period to take a 29-point win over former coach Darin Gray and the Hornets.
Newton led 13-6 at the end of the first period and outscored Lake 29-23 in the second to lead 42-29 at the half.
The Tigers then put the game away in the third period, outscoring the Hornets 22-6 to take a 64-35 lead into the fourth.
Newton had a balanced scoring attack, led by Kezarrian Wash who had 14 points. Kedrick Osby had 12 point while Darrius Thames added 11 points.
Tyreke Snow and Camron Blaylock had seven points apiece while Rayvion Nettles and Justin Thompson had six points apiece.
