It was a historic season for the Union football team, who came up just one game short of making the Class 2A state championship game.
Union rose to the state’s top-ranked team in 2A as it won the first six games, which included a pair of exciting wins over rivals Newton County (49-45) and Lake (27-22).
After a 28-14 setback to Forest, Union dominated division 4-2A play including a 56-21 win over then undefeated Sebastopol and a 41-18 win over Philadelphia to claim the division championship.
The highlight of the season came in the third round of the playoffs when the Yellowjackets took a 34-26 win over Calhoun City to advance to the semifinals for the first time in school history. Union then lost the next week to eventual 2A champion Charleston.
Union also set school records in points scored with 550 and total yardage with 3,418 yards rushing and 2,410 yards passing for 5,828 yards of total offense.
