The Division 5-4A schedule hasn’t been kind to the Newton County basketball teams.
Newton County was swept in a pair of 5-4A contests last week, falling to Northeast Lauderdale and Quitman.
Newton County will return to action this week as they travel to Northeast Jones on Tuesday and host Mendenhall on Friday.
NE Lauderdale girls 62,
Newton County 37
The Lady Trojans jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back as they took a 25-point win in division 5-4A play.
Northeast led 14-4 at the end of the first and 34-15 at the half. The Lady Trojans continued to pull away in the third, outscoring the Lady Cougars 17-11 to take a 51-26 lead into the fourth, where each team scored 11 points.
Nahriah Brown led newton County with 13 points while Hannah McDougle had eight points and Keasja Wansley added seven points.

The Trojans used a big second period and pulled away in the second half to take a 40-point win over the Cougars.
Northeast led just 11-10 at the end of the first period before outscoring Newton County 25-6 in the third to take a 36-16 lead into the half. Northeast continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Newton County 19-10 in the third and 21-9 in the fourth.
Cam Dukes led Newton County with seven points while Josiah Cleveland, Chris Thomas and Davion Hillie each had six points apiece.
Quitman girls 55,
Newton County 32
The Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Cougars in every period to take a 23-point win in 5-4A play.
In a high-scoring first period, Quitman took a 24-14 lead in the first and outscored Newton County 9-2 in the second to lead 33-16 at the half. Quitman continued to extend the lead in the second half as they outscored Newton County 8-7 in the third and 14-9 in the fourth to take the win.
Nahriah Brown led Newton County with 15 points.

The Panthers used a steady supply of offense and pulled away to take a 20-point win over the Cougars.
Quitman led 14-6 at the end of the first period and outscored Newton County 17-12 in the second to lead 31-18 at the half. The Panthers pulled away in the third as they outscored the Cougars 17-8 to take a 48-26 lead into the third.
Jamaal Croft and Josiah Cleveland led Newton County with 10 points apiece. Davion Hillie had six points while Deon Towner and Chris Thomas each had five points apiece.
SE Lauderdale boys 56,

The Cougars struggled on offense as they dropped a 31-point decision to Southeast on Saturday at East Central.
Southeast jumped out to a 17-2 lead in the first and led 36-12 at the half. Southeast outscored County 13-12 in the third and 7-1 in the fourth.
Josiah Cleveland led County with nine points while Chris Thomas had five points.
