The Newton County tennis team had another busy week on courts last week.
After losing 6-1 to Oxford on Thursday, Newton County split a pair of games on Saturday, beating St. Andrew’s 5-2 and losing to Northwest Rankin 5-2.
Newton County will return to action this week as they host Jackson Prep on Tuesday at open division 5-4A play on Thursday at Northeast Lauderdale.
County 5, St. Andrew’s 2
Newton County took a three-point victory over St. Andrews for their only victory of the week.
In singles, St. Andrew’s took both points as Tate Baucum lost 5-4 by default in the boy’s match. Ava Espey lost 7-5, 6-2 in girl’s singles.
In boys’ doubles, Daylon Nance and Lee Hill won at No. 1 doubles by default, and Donald Blake and Cole Tadlock won at the No. 2 spot by default as well.
In girls’ doubles, Kamryn Rodriguez and Lauren Addy won 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Marilyn Tullos and Brenah Flint won 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Parker Chaney and Emily Stewart came back from a first-set loss to win 4-6, 6-0, 10-2.
Northwest Rankin 5, County 2
Northwest Rankin won both singles points and took a three-point win over Newton County on Saturday.
In boy’s singles, Lee Hill lost 6-1, 6-1 while Marilyn Tullos lost 6-0, 6-0 in girl’s singles.
In boys’ doubles Daylon Nance and Parker Chaney won by default by were leading 6-0, 4-3 when the match was called at No. 1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles, Donald Blake and Cole Tadlock lost 6-4, 6-3.
On the girls’ side, Kamryn Rodriguez and Emily Stewart lost 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 1 spot while Lauren Addy and Ava Espey took a three-set win at the No. 2 spot, winning 3-6, 7-6(5), 10-8.
In mixed doubles, Keenan Selman and Maggie Bounds lost 6-0, 6-0.
Oxford 6, County 1
Newton County hosted 5A power Oxford on Thursday and lost to the Chargers.
In singles, Keenan Selman lost on the boy’s side 6-0, 6-0 while Ava Espey lost 6-1, 6-1 on the girl’s side.
In boys’ doubles, Daylon Nance and Lee Hill lost 6-0, 7-5 at the No. 1 spot while Parker Chaney and Tate Baucum lost 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls’ doubles, Kamryn Rodriguez grabbed Newton County’s only point with a 7-5, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot while Emily Stewart and Marilyn Tullos lost 6-0, 6-7(6), 10-1 at the No. 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Cole Tadlock and Maggie Bounds lost 6-0, 6-1.
