The Newton County baseball team won two of three games last week, including a big 5-4A win over Mendenhall.
The Cougars beat Mendenhall 7-2 on Tuesday but Friday’s game was rained out. County then lost 2-0 to Kosciusko on Saturday and beat Morton 7-4 to finish out the week.
Newton County, now 8-12 on the season, faces a crucial 5-4A series with Northeast Lauderdale this week. County will host the Trojans on Tuesday and travel to Northeast on Friday. A sweep of the Trojans would secure a playoff spot for the Cougars. County’s second game with Mendenhall was rained out on Friday and a makeup date was being discussed. County will finish the week on Saturday as they travel to Madison St. Joseph for a 1 p.m. contest.
County 7, Mendenhall 2
The Cougars opened up and early lead and never relented to take a five-run win over the Tigers in a key 5-4A matchup on Tuesday.
County scored three in the first and two in the third to lead 5-2 after three. The Cougars added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
County had seven hits in the contest, led by Tyson Wood who was 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. Cole Shimfessel was 2-for-2 while Tucker Fitch walked twice and scored twice. David Burton and Joshua Mott each had RBI singles while Gage Hollingsworth also had an RBI. Rod Evans and Griffin Bailey each scored runs for the Cougars.
Burton was solid on the mound for the Cougars as he pitched all seven innings and scattered four hits and three walks while striking out 14 to pick up the win.
Kosciusko 2, County 0
The Whippets won a short game on Saturday, winning in 3 1/2 innings.
Kosciusko scored one in the first and second innings.
County didn’t have a hit while Tyson Wood limited to the Whippets to two runs on four hits and two walks.
County 7, Morton 4
The Cougars used a pair of three-run innings to take three-run win over the Panthers in their second game of the day on Saturday.
County scored three in the second and fifth with one run in the third. Morton scored two in the second and fourth innings.
County outhit Morton 9-7 as David Burton was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Joshua Mott was also 2-for-3 with an RBI while Tyler Cavenaugh singled and drove in two runs. Gage Hollingsworth and Tyson Wood each scored two runs apiece for the Cougars.
Jacob Hitt got the start on the mound and pitched five solid innings, giving up three unearned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five. Tyler Cavenaugh pitched the last inning, giving up one hit and two walks while striking out two.
