The Newton County Lady Cougars won four out of five contests last week and stayed unbeaten in Division 5-4A play.
The Lady Cougars swept a pair of games from Northeast Jones, winning 4-3 and 4-0 in 5-4A action. They also beat Taylorsville 14-10 and Clarkdale 15-5. They lost a tight 4-3 decision to Enterprise.
Newton County improves to 17-3 on the season and will take on Northeast Lauderdale this week in a two-game series. The Lady Cougars will travel to Northeast on Tuesday and host the Lady Trojans on Thursday.
County 4, Northeast Jones 3
The Lady Cougars overcame an early deficit and took a one-run win over the Lady Tigers on Tuesday.
Northeast scored two in the first and one in the fifth before Newton County scored one in the third and fourth and two in the fifth.
Newton County had seven hits, led by Landree Amis who was 2-for-4 with a double, one run scored and one RBI. Lizzy Hollingsworth, Lorren Ivey and Alex Weir each doubled and drove in a run.
Brittany Thomas pitched all seven innings for the Lady Cougars and gave up three runs on eight hits and struck out nine.
County 4, Northeast Jones 0
The Lady Cougars got a shutout on the mound from Shelby Anderson to sweep the season series from Northeast Jones on Thursday.
Newton County scored one in the first and sixth with two in the fifth.
Newton County had six hits, led by Katelyn Gipson who was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Lizzy Hollingsworth also had an RBI single while Landree Amis signed and scored.
Anderson pitched all seven innings and scattered five hits while striking out 11.
County 14, Taylorsville 10
The Lady Cougars scored 12 runs in the first two innings and held on to take a four-run win on Friday.
Taylorsville scored five in the first before Newton County scored four in the first and eight in the second to lead 12-6. County added two more runs in the fifth.
County had 10 hits and six walks in the contest. Shelby Anderson was 2-for-5 with two triples, two runs scored and three RBIs while Lizzy Hollingsworth was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Katelyn Gipson was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored while Karlye Tolbird had a double and drove in three runs. Landree Amis also tripled and drove in two runs while Haley McDowell scored twice.
Brittany Thomas pitched three innings and gave up six runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four. Mandarie Leach pitched the last four innings and gave up four runs on three hits and a walk.
County 15, Clarkdale 5
The Lady Cougars had 13 hits and took advantage of six errors to take a five-inning, run-rule win over the Lady Bulldogs.
Newton County scored six in the first, two in the second and fifth and five in the third.
Maeli Ben was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Shelby Anderson doubled and drove in two runs. Katelyn Jackson also had two RBIs.
Lorren Ivey got the start in the circle for Newton County and pitched four innings, giving up three unearned runs on four hits while striking out five. Natalie Lampton pitched the final inning and gave up two unearned runs on one hit.
Enterprise 4, County 3
The Lady Bulldogs got a walk-off win over the Lady Cougars on Saturday.
County scored one in the second and third before Enterprise sent the game into extra innings with two in the bottom of the seventh. County scored one in the eighth before Enterprise won it with two in the eighth.
County had six hits as Shelby Anderson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Line Phillips tripled and drove in a run while Lizzy Hollingsworth and Alex Weir each singled and scored a run.
Shelby Anderson pitched 7 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out 10.
