The Newton County tennis team won all four matches they played last week, including three division 5-4A matches to claim another division title.
The Cougars beat West Lauderdale 5-2, Quitman 6-1 and Northeast Jones 7-0 to finish 4-0 in 5-4A action and win their 13th division championship in 14 seasons and 14th overall.
The Cougars finished out the week with a 6-1 win over Clinton.
Newton County, now 10-6 overall and 5-0 in Division 5-4A play, will return to action this week as they will play Stone County at Jones Junior College on Tuesday. On Thursday, County will host Brandon in their Senior Rose match. The Cougars will finish the week on Saturday at the Northwest Rankin Tournament.
County 5, West Lauderdale 2
The Cougars claimed a key division win over rival West Lauderdale last week.
In singles, Lee Hill took a 6-0, 6-1 win on the boy’s side while Josie Tullos fell 6-0, 6-0 on the girl’s side.
In boys’ doubles, the Cougars split with the Knights as Parker Chaney and Tate Baucum won 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot while Cole Tadlock and Keenan Selman lost 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls’ doubles, County swept both points as Lauren Addy and Ava Espey won 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 at the No. 1 spot and Kamryn Rodriguez and Marilyn Tullos won 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Daylon Nance and Emily Stewart won 6-3, 6-0 to finish off the win for Newton County.
County 6, Quitman 1
The Cougars dominated a division contest with Quitman on Tuesday.
In singles, Tate Baucum won 6-0, 6-0 on the boy’s side while Ava Espey lost 6-3, 7-6 (7) on the girl’s side.
Newton County took both boys doubles points as Daylon Nance and Lee Hill won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Cole Tadlock and Donald Blake won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. In girls' doubles, Kamryn Rodriguez and Lauren Addy won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Marilyn Tullos and Maggie Bounds won 6-0, 6-0 at the No 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Parker Chaney and Emily Stewart won 6-0, 6-0.
County 7, Northeast Jones 0
The Cougars took all seven courts with a shutout win over Northeast Jones on Thursday.
In singles, Tate Baucum won 6-4, 6-3 on the boy’s side while Ava Espey won 6-3, 6-3 on the girl’s side.
In doubles, Daylon Nance and Lee Hill won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 boys spot while Cole Tadlock and Keenan Selman won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 boys spot. In girls’ doubles, Kamryn Rodriguez and Lauren Addy won 6-1 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Marilyn Tullos and Brenah Flint won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.

The Cougars rounded out the week with a five-point win over Class 6A Clinton on Friday.
County won both singles matches, as Lee Hill won 6-1, 6-0 on the boy’s side and Marilyn Tullos won 6-4, 6-2 on the girl’s side.
In doubles, Newton County swept the boys and girls events as Daylon Nance and Parker Chaney won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 boys spot while Cole Tadlock and Keenan Selman won 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-2. On the girl’s side, Kamryn Rodriguez and Lauren Addy won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot while Emily Stewart and Ava Espey won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Tate Baucum and Maggie Bounds lost 7-5, 6-0.
