The schedule hasn’t been very kind to the Newton County tennis team this season.
Newton County picked up only one win last week, an important 7-0 win over Quitman while dropping matches to McGill-Toolen Academy and St. Paul’s Academy. Along the way, they also lost to 6A power Ocean Springs and traditional 5A power Oxford.
Newton County doesn’t get much of a break from the schedule as they host Jackson Academy on Tuesday at 4 p.m. On Thursday, Newton County will travel to Jackson Prep for a 3:30 p.m. match and then take on St. Andrews at 6 p.m. On Saturday, County will travel to Oxford and take on Oxford at noon and Lafeyette County at 2 p.m.
McGill-Toolen Academy boys 8, County 1
In a college-style match, the Cougars dropped an 8-1 decision to McGill-Toolen Academy of Mobile on Thursday.
The two teams played six singles matches and Newton County’s only point came at the No. 3 position as Daylon Nance took an 8-3 win. At No. 1 singles, Joel Hill fell 8-0 to Brooks Green, who is the No. 2 ranked player in Alabama. At No. 2 singles, Dylan Barnett lost 8-0 while Lee Hill lost 8-3 at No. 4. Peyton Chaney lost 8-5 in the No. 5 spot while Parker Chaney lost 8-2 at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles, Joel Hill and Dylan Barnett lost 8-3 in the No. 1 spot while Peyton Chaney and Daylon Nance lost 8-6 in the No. 2 spot. Parker Chaney and Lee Hill lost 8-2 in the No. 3 spot.
McGill-Toolen Academy girls 5, Newton County 4
On the girls side Newton County lost a close 5-4 decision.
In singles, McGill took four of the six points as Kailee Brown won 8-4 at the No. 4 spot while Kamryn Rodriguez lost 8-2 at the No. 5 spot. Josie Hurst lost 8-1 at the No. 1 spot while Ali Grace Walker lost 8-7 at the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 spot, Lauren Addy dropped an 8-3 decision while Kayla Baucum fell 8-7 in the No. 6 spot.
In doubles, Walker and Hurst took an 8-3 win in the No. 1 spot while Brown and Addy won 8-2 at the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 spot, Baucum and Emily Stewart lost 8-4.
St. Paul’s Academy boys 5, Newton County 4
In their second college-style match, the Cougars dropped a close match to St. Paul’s Academy.
In singles, Lee Hill got a point at the No. 4 spot as he took a 9-7 win while Parker Chaney took a point at No. 6 with an 8-3 win. In other singles, Joel Hill lost 8-1 at No. 1, Dylan Barnett lost 8-3 at No. 2, Daylon Nance lost 8-1 at No. 3 and Peyton Chaney lost 8-5 at No. 5
In doubles, Newton County picked up two points. Joel Hill and Dylan Barnett took a tight 8-7 win at the No. 1 spot while Parker Chaney and Lee Hill took an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles. Peyton Chaney and Daylon Nance lost 8-3 at the No. 2 spot.
St. Paul’s Academy girls 7, County 2
The Lady Cougars suffered their second loss, this one a 7-2 loss to St. Paul’s Academy.
Newton County managed only one point in singles as Kailee Brown took an 8-1 win. In other singles action, Ali Grace Walker lost 8-0 at the No. 1 spot, Josie Hurst lost 8-0 at the No. 2 spot and Lauren Addy lost 8-2 at No. 3. at the No. 5 spot, Kamryn Rodriguez lost 8-4 while Emily Stewart lost 8-5 at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles, Brown and Addy grabbed a point as they took an 8-3 win at the No. 2 spot. At No. 1 girls doubles, Walker and Hurst lost 8-4 while Kayla Baucum and Rodriguez lost 8-6 at the No. 3 position.
Ocean Springs 7, County 0
Newton County dropped another lopsided decision to Class 6A Ocean Springs last week.
In singles, Parker Chaney lost 6-0, 6-0 on the boys side while Kamryn Rodriguez lost 6-1, 6-0 on the girls side. In doubles, Peyton Chaney an Daylon Nance lost 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot while Dylan Barnett and Lee Hill lost 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, Ali Grace Walker and Josie Hurst lost 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Kayla Baucum and Lauren Addy lost 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. Joel Hill and Kailee Brown lost 6-2, 6-2 at mixed doubles.
Oxford 5, County 2
Newton County dropped another decision to Class 5A Oxford last week.
In singles, Newton County struggled as Parker Chaney lost 6-1, 6-0 on the boys side while Kamryn Rodrigues lost 6-0, 6-0 on the girls side.
In boys doubles, Newton County lost both matches as Dylan Barnett and Peyton Chaney lost 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot and Daylon Nance and Lee Hill lost 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls doubles, Newton County grabbed both points as Ali Grace Walker and Lauren Addy won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 slot and Josie Hurst and Kailee Brown won 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Joel Hill and Kayla Baucum lost 7-5, 6-3.
County 7, Quitman 0
Newton County picked up an easy division win as they blanked Quitman last Thursday.
The only points Newton County gave up were in singles as Parker Chaney won 6-1, 6-0 on the boys side and Kamryn Rodriguez won 6-3, 6-3 on the girls side.
From there, it was all Newton County as Dylan Barnett and Peyton Chaney won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles while Daylon Nance and Lee Hill won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
On the girls side, Ali Grace Walker and Lauren Addy won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Josie Hurst and Kailee Brown won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Joel Hill and Kayla Baucum won 6-0, 6-0.
