Before the season started, Lake baseball coach Jake Nester didn’t know how his pitching staff would be this season.
So far, he couldn’t ask for any better.
The Hornets got two shutout performances last week, as they beat Morton 1-0 and Forest 10-0 to open the season and then finished off the week with a 6-2 win over Morton.
Lake (3-0) will return to play this week as they travel to Newton to open Division 4-2A play. They will host the Tigers on Friday and will host Pisgah on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Lake 1, Morton 0
The Hornets only had two hits, but they were all Lake needed to take a shutout win over the Panthers.
Lake scored its only run in the third inning. Brady McGee singled and stole two bases while Noah Essary had a double. Nathan Lott scored Lake’s only run.
Essary got the start on the mound and pitched five innings and gave up just three hits to grab the win. He struck out six and walked just one. Brady McGee got the save as he pitched the last inning and struck out two.
Lake 10, Forest 0
The Hornets banged out 11 hits, as they beat Forest for their second straight shutout of the year.
Lake scored three in the first, two in the second, sixth and seventh innings along with one in the fourth.
Lake had 11 hits in the game as Seth Harrison was 3-for-4 with a double. Nathan Lott was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Mickey Parker was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Will Geter was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs while Brady McGee was 2-for-3 with a triple and two walks.
Logan Palmer drew two walks and scored two runs while Zywon Ledbetter scored two runs as a courtesy runner.
Seth Harrison got the start on the mound and pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and striking out nine to pick up the win. Logan Palmer pitched the final inning and struck out two.
Lake 6, Morton 2
The Hornets used a five-run fourth inning and took a four-run win over the Panthers on Friday.
Lake scored five in the fourth and one in the fifth while Morton scored in the seventh to snap Lake’s 20-inning scoreless streak to start the year.
Lake had just four hits in the contest, including an RBI double by Brady McGee. Seth Harrison had a single and scored two runs. Ben Moore had two walks and drove in two runs while Logan Palmer also had two RBIs. Will Geter was hit by a pitch three times.
McGee pitched a complete game, going all seven innings and giving up two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out 10.
