The Newton County Lady Cougars won three out of four contests this past week.
The Lady Cougars swept a pair of games from Choctaw Central, winning 4-3 on Monday and 9-3 on Thursday. On Saturday, Newton County hammered West Jones 11-2 and lost 7-6 to George County.
Newton County, now 11-5-1, will return to action as they travel to Northeast Jones on Tuesday and host the Lady Tigers on Thursday in a key 5-4A showdown. On Friday, Newton County will host Clarkdale in a 1 p.m. contest.
County 4, Choctaw Central 3
The Lady Cougars held off a late Choctaw Central rally to take a one-run win over the Lady Warriors on Monday.
County scored one in the third and two in the fifth to go up 3-0. Choctaw tied it with three in the top of the sixth but County answered with one in the bottom of the sixth to take the win.
Newton County had just four hits in the contest. Lorren Ivey had a double in the sixth and eventually scored the game winner. Lizzy Hollingsworth had a triple and drove in a run. Jada McDougle had a single and scored a run while Katelyn Gipson had a double and scored a run.
Shelby Anderson got the start in the circle and pitched all seven innings, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out two.
County 9, Choctaw Central 3
The Lady Cougars scored five runs in the seventh inning to take its second win over Choctaw Central on Thursday.
The game was tight early as Newton County scored one in the fourth. It wasn’t until the sixth that County scored three runs that they started to pull away. The Lady Cougars added five insurance runs in the fifth for the win.
Newton County had nine hits in the contest with just one multiple hitter. Lorren Ivey led the way as she was 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs. Brittany Thomas had three RBIs while Katelyn Gipson had a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Lizzy Hollingsworth had a double and drove in a run while Landree Amis had an RBI single. Jada McDougle and Shelby Anderson each had singles and scored runs.
Brittany Thomas got the start in the circle and pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two.
County 11, West Jones 2
The Lady Cougars scored seven runs in the first inning and took the win in five innings in a time-limit contest on Saturday.
After scoring seven in the first, the Lady Cougars added four more in the third.
Newton County had 10 hits in the contest as Jada McDougle was 4-for-4 with two runs scored. Shelby Anderson was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs while Katelyn Gipson had a grand slam home run in the first and also scored two runs. Karlye Tolbird and Jessi Thaggard each walked twice and scored twice.
Brittany Thomas pitched all five innings and gave up two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out three.
George County 7, County 6
George County scored two in the bottom of the seventh to take a walk-off win from the Lady Cougars on Saturday.
Newton County trailed 3-1 before scoring four runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. George County tied it at 5-5 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. County scored one in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead before George County won with two in the bottom of the seventh.
Newton County had just four hits in the contest as Shelby Anderson was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Lizzy Hollingsworth and Karlye Tolbird also had hits for the Lady Cougars.
Shelby Anderson started in the circle and was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on 11 hits and one walk while striking out seven.
