The Newton County Lady Cougars haven’t been able to enjoy many wins this season but got a big one on Tuesday night.
The Lady Cougars used a strong second half to beat rival West Lauderdale 60-49 on Tuesday in their only victory of the week. They lost 69-31 to Northeast Lauderdale on Friday night.
The Newton County boys lost both of their contests, falling 73-46 to West and 71-41 to Northeast.
Newton County will end the regular season this week with a pair of games, as they will travel to Quitman on Tuesday and host Northeast Jones for senior night on Thursday.

In a season short on wins, the Lady Cougars were able to get one against their rivals, taking an 11-point win over the Lady Knights.
The game was tight in the first half as County led 15-11 at the end of the first but West fought back to tie the game at 27-27 at the half. County started to pull away in the second half, outscoring West 13-8 in the third and 20-14 in the fourth.
Christaya Denson led a balanced scoring attack for Newton County with 14 points. Jayden Mack and Nahriah Brown each had 11 points apiece while Keasja Wansley had 10 points and Hanna McDougle added eight points.
West Lauderdale boys 73, Newton County 46
The Knights built a big lead in the first half as they took a 27-point win over the Cougars.
West used a steady supply of offense to take control of the game in the first half as they outscored County 22-12 in the first and 22-14 in the second to take a 44-26 lead at the half. The Knights continued to build the lead in the second half, outscoring County 14-12 in the third and 15-8 in the fourth.
Josiah Cleveland led Newton County with 15 points while Davion Hillie had nine points and Deon Towner added six points.

The Lady Trojans outscored the Lady Cougars in every period as they took a 38-point win in division play.
Northeast led 18-5 at the end of the first and then outscored County 26-9 in the second to lead 44-14 at the half. Northeast continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring County 15-11 in the third and 10-6 in the fourth.
Haley McDowell and Hannah McDougle each scored six points apiece for County while Nahriah Brown and Jayden Mack had four points apiece.

The Trojans built a big lead in the first half and cruised to a 30-point win over the Cougars.
Northeast led 24-8 at the end of the first and 45-20 at the half. County outscored Northeast 19-16 in the third to cut the score to 61-39 but the Trojans used a 12-7 fourth to take the win.
Chris Thomas led Newton County with eight points while Aften Johnson, Jamaal Croft and Justin Thompson each had six points apiece. Cam Dukes added five points for County.
