The Newton Lady Tigers pushed their winning streak to eight games as they hit the 20-win mark on the season.
The Lady Tigers had little trouble with Lake as they took a 47-28 win on Friday night while the Tigers took a 61-49 win over the Hornets.
The Newton girls improve to 20-2 on the season and 6-0 in 4-2A play. The Tigers improve to 18-7 on the year and 5-1 in 4-2A play, locked in a tie for first with Philadelphia.
Newton will finish out the regular season this week as they travel to Scott Central on Tuesday and travel to Union on Friday.
Newton girls 47, Lake 28
The Lady Tigers continued their strong play as they took a 19-point win over the Lady Hornets on Friday night.
Newton dominated the first-half action as they outscored Lake 12-5 in the first and 13-4 in the second to take a 25-9 lead at the half. The Lady Tigers extended the lead in the third, outscoring the Lady Hornets 18-12 in the third to give Newton a 43-21 lead going into the fourth.
Nia McCalphia led Newton with 15 points while Zia Shields added nine points.
Laurel Breland led Lake with 11 points while D’Nara Barton had nine points.
Newton boys 61, Lake 49
The Tigers pulled away in the middle two periods and took a 12-point win over the Hornets on Friday night
Lake led 8-6 in the first period before Newton outscored the Hornets 15-5 in the second to take a 21-13 lead at the half. The Tigers pulled away in the third, outscoring the Hornets 24-9 to take a 45-22 lead going into the fourth. The Hornets fought back in the fourth by outscoring the Tigers 27-16 for the final margin.
Jamarian Pace led Newton with 17 points while Deshaun Watts had 12 points. Tyler Bedford had 10 points while Dazmeon Page added nine points.
Zywon Ledbetter led Lake with 10 points while Tim Norris and Danarrious Hughes had nine points each. Tim Lay and Brady McGee each had six points apiece.
