The Newton Lady Tigers added two more impressive wins to their early season resume last week as they beat 2A contender Puckett and then knocked off Class 6A Northwest Rankin on Saturday.
The Lady Tigers beat Puckett 52-47 and then beat Northwest Rankin 34-28 on Saturday.
Newton has just one game over the Thanksgiving holiday as the Lady Tigers (5-0) are set to play McAdams in the Leake County Shootout on Tuesday.
Newton girls 52, Puckett 47
The Lady Tigers used a balanced scoring attack as they took a five-point win over the Lady Wolves on Tuesday.
Each team scored 10 points in the first period but Newton pulled out to a 22-16 lead at the half. Puckett outscored Newton 14-11 in the third to cut the lead to 33-30 heading to the fourth. Newton held on as they outscored Puckett 19-17 in the fourth to take the win.
Myja McNichols led Newton with 19 points while McKinley Ware had 13 points. Nia McCalphia had nine points and JaLeah Hickmon added six points.
Newton boys 60, Puckett 24
The Tigers had little trouble with Puckett as they took a 36-point win on Tuesday.
Newton led 13-5 at the end of the first and then exploded in the second, outscoring the Wolves 30-5 to lead 43-10 at the half. The Tigers outscored the Wolves 11-6 in the third to lead 54-16 going into the fourth.
Dazmeon Page led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points while Tyler Bedford had 12 points. Yorel Phillips had nine points and Jacquan Roberts added eight points.
Tiger girls 34, NW Rankin 28
The Lady Tigers pulled away late in a defensive battle with the Lady Cougars on Saturday.
Points were at a premium for most of the game as Northwest Rankin held a slim 13-12 lead at the half. After each team scored six points in the third period, Newton outscored the Lady Cougars 16-9 in the fourth to take the win.
Nia McAlphia led Newton with 12 points while Myja McNichols had six points. JaLeah Hickmon and McKinley Ware each had five points apiece.
NW Rankin boys 56, Tigers 50
In a back and forth contest, Class 6A Northwest Rankin held on to take a six-point win over the Tigers on Saturday.
Newton led 9-8 at the end of the first before Northwest outscored the Tigers 17-12 in the second to take a 25-21 lead at the half. The Cougars were able to extend that lead in the third, outscoring the Tigers 15-12 to lead 40-33 at the end of the third.
Dazmeon Page led Newton with 16 points while Yorel Phillips added 13 points.
