Lake’s baseball season and run through the Class 2A playoffs came to a screeching halt last week.
The Hornets fell two games shy of the Class 2A championship series as they lost two game to Calhoun City, falling 11-1 and 7-1.
Lake finishes the season with a 22-9 record while Calhoun City improves to 28-3 and advances to the Class 2A championship series where they will take on the winner of the Taylorsville and Madison St. Joseph series this week at Trustmark Park in Jackson.
Calhoun City 11, Lake 1
The Wildcats scored nine runs in the last three innings to pull away and take a 10-run win over the Hornets on Tuesday.
Each team scored one run in the third inning before Calhoun added one in the fourth, two in the fifth and sixth. The Wildcats finished off with five runs in the seventh for the final margin.
Calhoun outhit Lake 11-9 but the Hornets left seven runners on base.
Brady McGee was 2-for-3 and scored a run while Mickey Parker had a single and drove in Lake’s only run. Ben Moore doubled for Lake’s only extra base hit while Noah Essary, Nathon Lott, Noah Thornton, Will Geter and Logan Palmer also had singles.
Essary started on the mound and pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on eight hits and two walks whiles striking out three. Nathon Lott and Seth Harrison pitched in relief.
Calhoun City 7, Lake 1
The Wildcats built a 7-0 lead in the first three innings and cruised to the win on Wednesday to sweep the series.
Calhoun scored on in the first, five in the second and one in the third for their runs while Lake scored one run in the sixth.
Calhoun outhit Lake 5-3 in the contest. Mickey Parker singled and scored Lake’s only run while Noah Essary and Nathon Lott also had singles. Seth Harrison had Lake’s only RBI.
Brady McGee lasted only 1 1/3 innings in his worst outing of the season as he gave up six runs, only two earned on three hits and three walks while Parker came in and pitched the last 4 2/3 innings and allowed just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out three.
