The Newton County Academy Generals flexed their muscles this past week with a two-game sweep of Centreville to open the Class AA playoffs.
The Generals beat the Tiger 9-5 on Tuesday and then finished off the Tigers with an 11-0 win on Friday.
NCA improves to 15-12 on the season with the sweep and will face Glenbrook, La., in the second round of the Class AA playoffs, which was scheduled to start on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Decatur.
NCA 11, Centreville 0
The Generals got a shutout performance from Hayden West as they finished off a two-game sweep of Centreville on Friday.
The Generals scored two in the first and fourth with single runs in the second, third and fifth to lead 7-0. The Generals finished off the game with four runs in the top of the seventh.
NCA outhit Centreville 14-3 in the game. Alec Thompson was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs while Hays West was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Hayden Wall was 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Hayden West was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Kemp Alderman walked twice and scored two runs.
Hayden West was dominant on the mound as he pitched all seven innings and gave up three hits and two runs while striking out 11.
NCA 9, Centreville 5
The Generals took an early lead and cruised to a four-run win over the Tigers on Tuesday to open the series.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning and Centreville scored one in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. But NCA scored five runs in the bottom of the second to lead 7-3. NCA added single runs in the third and fourth inning for their final run.
NCA had seven hits but drew eight walks. Hayden West was 2-for-4 while Kemp Alderman had a home run with four RBIs while drawing four walks. Alec Thompson singled and had two RBIs. Braxton Thoms, Hays West and Lincoln Jordan each scored two runs.
Alderman started on the mound and picked up the win, giving up four runs on four hits and seven walks while striking out eight. Thompson pitched the final two innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits and walk while striking out two.
