The Newton County Lady Cougars won a pair of games this past week and were on their way to a third.
The Lady Cougars beat Choctaw Central 9-2 on Monday and Clarkdale 14-4 on Tuesday. The Lady Cougars were beating Neshoba Central 16-5 before the game was postponed due to lightning and rain.
Newton County has three games scheduled this week as they host Meridian on Monday and will travel to Morton on Tuesday for their division opener. On Thursday, County will host Raleigh on Thursday in another league contest.
County 9, Choctaw Central 2
The Lady Cougars banged out 14 hits as they easily handled Choctaw Central on Monday.
Newton County led 3-0 after three innings before Choctaw scored two runs in the fourth inning to make the score 3-2. Newton County pulled away with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the win.
Shelby Anderson led Newton County by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Brittany Thomas was 2-for-3 with a home run, double and three RBIs. Katelyn Gipson and Lizzy Hollingsworth were each 2-for-4 with two runs scored apiece. Hollingsworth also had a double while Maeli Ben each had doubles.
Gipson picked up the win on the mound, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks.
County 14, Clarkdale 4
The Lady Cougars had 15 hits and took a six-inning, run-rule win over Clarkdale on Tuesday night.
Clarkdale scratched first with three runs in the top of the third inning. But Newton County responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and five more in the fourth and sixth innings.
Newton County had 15 hits in the contest as Ketelyn Gipson led the way by going 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs. Brittany Thomas was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. Lizzy Hollingsworth was 2-for-4 two doubles and two runs scored. Lorren Ivey was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBIs while Lanie Phillips was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Shelby Anderson had a triple and also scored two runs.
Gipson pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on five walks. Haley McDowell pitched the next 3 1/3 innings and gave up one run on five hits and three walks. Taysia Lewis pitched the last 1/3 of an inning.
County 16, Neshoba Central 5
In a Thursday contest, Newton County and Neshoba Central played 2 1/2 innings before the game was postponed due to lightning.
The game will be continued when Neshoba visits Newton County later this season.
Newton County scored six runs in the first and third with four runs in the second.
Newton County had seven home runs in the three innings played. Brittany Thomas was 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Lizzy Hollingsworth was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and four RBIs. Shelby Anderson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a home run. Lorren Ivey was 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs. Lanie Phillips had a home run and three RBIs while Casey Dube was 2-for-2 with a double.
