The Newton Lady Tigers have opened up the basketball season hitting on all cylinders as they took two victories so far this season, beating Provine 65-40 and Quitman 48-26.
Newton will travel to Puckett on Tuesday and will play at Northwest Rankin on Saturday night.
Newton girls 48, Quitman 26
The Lady Tigers almost doubled up Class 4A Quitman on Tuesday night.
Newton outscored Quitman in every period as they cruised to the win. Newton led 7-2 at the end of the first and 24-14 at the half. The Lady Tigers continued to extend the lead in the third as they outscored the Lady Panthers 14-6 in the third and 10-6 in the fourth.
Nia McCalphia led the Lady Tigers with 22 points as she was 9-of-14 from the field. Myja McNichols had 13 points and nine rebounds while JaLeah Hickmon added eight points and had 10 rebounds and three blocks. Keyshawna Nelson had seven rebounds while McKinley Ware added six rebounds.
Newton boys 33, Quitman 30
The Tigers grabbed their first win of the season last week against Class 4A Quitman.
After being tied 6-6 at the end of the first, Newton outscored Quitman 13-6 to take a 19-13 lead at the half. Quitman outscored Newton 7-3 in the third to cut the margin to 22-20 at the end of the third. But Newton outscored Quitman 11-10 in the fourth to hang on for the win. Jamarian Pace led Newton with 14 points while Dazmeon Page and Jacqain Roberts each had six points apiece.
Newton girls 65, Provine 40
The Lady Tigers used a big second half as they pulled away from Provine to take a 25-point win last Saturday.
Newton led 19-11 at the end of the first but Provine took the second period 16-10 as the Lady Tigers led 29-27 at the half. Newton pulled away in the third as they outscored the Lady Rams 18-4 to lead 47-31 and finished off the game by outscoring Provine 18-9.
Myja McNihols started off the season with a big game, pumping in 29 points as she was 10-of-14 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. Nia McCalphia had 12 points, eight assists and four steals while JaLeah Hickmon had 10 points and 11 rebounds along with five steals. McKinley Ware added nine points while McNichols had nine points.
Petal boys 62, Newton 36
The Tigers struggled in their season opener against Class 6A Petal.
Petal led 21-7 at the end of the first and 34-15 at the half. Petal outscored Newton 15-10 in the third and 13-11 in the fourth to take the win.
Tyler Bedford and Jamarian Pace each scored 10 points apiece for the Tigers.
