Both Newton basketball teams picked up big wins last Saturday as the Lady Tigers stayed unbeaten with a 40-33 win over Class 6A Meridian.
Not to be outdone, the Tigers grabbed a big win over Class 4A Northeast Jones 54-48 on Saturday at the Heidelberg Shootout.
Newton will return to action on Tuesday when former coach Marcus Luckett brings Jefferson Davis County to Newton. On Thursday, Newton hosts Forest in their only scheduled action.
Newton boys 54, Northeast Jones 48
The Tigers won another close game as they knocked off Class 4A Northeast Jones in overtime on Saturday at the Heidelberg Shootout.
The game was back and fourth the entire contest as Northeast led 10-8 at the end of the first. Newton took the second period 10-7 to lead 18-17 at the half. Northeast tied the game in the third, outscoring Newton 11-10 in the third to make the score 28-28. After each team scored 15 points in the fourth, Newton outscored Northeast 11-5 in overtime to take the win.
Yorel Phillips led Newton with 16 points while Jacquan Roberts had 11 points and Jamarian Paced added nine.
Newton girls 40, Meridian 33
The Lady Tigers stayed unbeaten as they beat Class 6A Meridian on Saturday at the Heidelberg Shootout.
Meridian jumped out to an early 7-3 lead before Newton outscored the Lady Wildcats 16-9 in the second period to take a 19-16 lead into the half. After each team scored five points in the third period, Newton extended its lead in the fourth, outscoring Meridian 15-13 to take the win.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 15 points while McKinley Ware added 13 points.
