Union pair commit to play baseball at Copiah-Lincoln CC
Union’s Lane Hanna and Casey Morris each committed to play college baseball at Copiah-Lincoln Community College this past week.
Morris hit .359 for the Yellowjackets this past season while Hanna hit .250.
On the mound, the left-handed Morris was 3-7 with a 3.88 ERA in 52.1 innings pitched and struck out 50. Hanna, a hard-throwing right hander, was 4-4 with a 2.49 ERA in 50.2 innings pitched as he struck out 20.
“I’m very proud of these two guys,” Union coach Dustin Hamrick said. “They have gotten tremendously better over the last few years and I expect them to be two of the better pitchers in 2A baseball this year. One of my goals as a coach is to get as many of my players as I can to continue their baseball career on the next level so that they can continue in their development as men, help them get scholarship money, and give them the opportunity to continue playing the game they love. Lane and Casey have great things ahead for them.”
Ogletree helps Tech to win tourney title over Alabama
Luke Schniederjans fired a 4-under-par 68 and then rolled in a 12-foot putt for birdie on the first playoff hole, lifting 18th-ranked Georgia Tech to the team championship over No. 19 Alabama Sunday at the 29th Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.
The putt for Schniederjans, a sophomore from Powder Springs, Ga., capped a roller-coaster ride for the Yellow Jackets over the final couple of holes in regulation. Tech had taken the lead in the tournament after starting the round a shot behind Florida, and had used a superlative performance on the back nine to move three shots ahead of the Crimson Tide, with whom the Jackets began the round tied for second place.
Andy Ogletree, the Tech sophomore from Union, who shot 69-68 the first two days to stay near the lead, didn’t count for the Yellow Jackets on Sunday after shooting 73, yet remained the team’s highest finisher, tying for seventh place at 6-under-par 210. It was the highest finish of his career.
