After suffering a tough loss to Quitman on Monday, the Newton Tigers bounced back to take two Division 4-2A wins last week.
After a 47-44 win over Quitman, Newton beat Philadelphia 53-42 on Tuesday and then hammered Scott Central 66-42 on Friday.
The Tigers won two out of three games this week, including a pair of big division 4-2A wins. After losing 47-44 to Quitman on Monday at the Jefferson Davis County MLK Shootout, the Tigers handed Philadelphia its first division loss with a 53-42 win over the Tornadoes and finished the week with a 66-42 win over Scott Central.
The Newton boys improve to 17-7 on the season and are 4-1 in Division 4-2A play, splitting games with Philadelphia.
Newton has just one game scheduled next week as they will travel to Lake on Friday.
Newton boys 53, Philadelphia 42
The Tigers used a solid defensive effort to beat the Tornadoes by 11 points on Tuesday night.
Newton led 9-4 at the end of the first and outscored the Tornadoes 16-13 in the second to lead 25-17 at the half. The Tigers extended the lead in the third, outscoring the Tornadoes 16-13 to take a 41-30 lead into the fourth. Each team scored 12 points in the fourth period.
Jamarian Pace led the Tigers with 24 points while Jayden Parker had eight points and Dazmeon Watts added seven points.
Asher Morgan led Philadelphia with 11 points while Jacobi York added nine points.
Quitman 47, Newton 44
The Panthers more than doubled up the Tigers in the middle two periods and held on to take a three-point win on Monday at the Jefferson Davis County MLK Shootout.
Newton led 15-11 at the end of the first before Quitman used a 12-4 advantage in the second to take a 23-19 lead at the half. Quitman outscored Newton 11-7 in the third to lead 34-26 going into the fourth. Newton fought back in the fourth as they outscored Quitman 18-13 but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Jay Roberts led Newton with 12 points while Jayden Parker had nine points. Jamarian Pace and Jacquez Robinson each had seven points apiece.
Newton boys 66, Scott Central 42
The Tigers had little trouble with the Rebels as they took a 24-point win over the Tigers on Friday night.
The Tigers started quick as they led 19-5 at the end of the first and 34-16 at the half. Scott Central outscored Newton 14-11 in the third to cut the score to 45-30 going into the fourth. Newton finished off the game by outscoring Scott Central 21-12.
Jamarian Pace led Newton with 21 points while Dazmeon Page had 10 points. Jayden Parker and Jay Roberts each had nine points apiece.
