Coming off the program’s first Class 4A state championship, Newton County has struggled with a rigorous schedule.
But that schedule paid off as Newton County beat rival West Lauderdale 5-2 to win the program’s 13th division title in 14 years.
Newton County is now 7-9 on the season and will host Brandon on Monday at 4:30 p.m. The Cougars will host the Division 5-4A Tournament on Tuesday at East Central. County will then begin the 4A team playoffs on Friday or Saturday.

Newton County won all of the doubles matches as they clinched the program’s 13th division title in 14 years.
West Lauderdale’s only points came in singles as Simon Bowers beat Parker Chaney 6-, 6-2 on the boys side. On the girls side, Harper Bryan beat Kamryn Rodriguez 6-1, 6-0.
Newton County dominated in doubles action, taking all five points. At No. 1 boys doubles, Dylan Barnett and Lee Hill needed three sets to beat Brooks Hull and Jack Green 6,3, 2-6, 10-4 at No. 1 boys doubles while Peyton Chaney and Daylon Nance beat Cade Johnson and Zack Vinet 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, Josie Hurst and Ali Grace Walker beat Sierra Gutierrez and Caroline Green 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while Kailee Brown and Lauren Addy beat Farrah Williamson and Kyra Howell 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Joel Hill and Kayla Baucum beat Chance Davidson and McKenzie Weldon 6-1, 6-1.
