One of the state’s best matchups this week will feature the Union Yellowjackets.
Union stayed unbeaten last week with a win over Newton County and will put that record to the test this week when they travel to East Webster.
East Webster is 5-0 on the season with some impressive wins on their schedule. The Wolverines opened the season with a 25-6 win over South Pontotoc and then beat Shaw 23-12. After a 51-0 win over Vardaman, the Wolverines beat Choctaw County 23-20. Last week, the Wolverines beat East Union 62-38 in a shootout.
“They have been really good so far,” Breland said. “I saw a little bit of them against Nanih Waiya in the jamboree. They have a dominant nose guard and he stuck out for them. He caused Nanih Waiya a lot of fits. We have to make sure our centers are low and assuring the snap before we do anything. I feel like we have a lot in common. I know we are expecting a good crowd and a good atmosphere. It should be a playoff-like atmosphere. I know our band is excited about going up there and going head to head with them.”
Winona Christian at NCA
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Generals this week as they host Winona Christian for homecoming.
The Stars have rolled out to a 5-0 start on the season. After a 34-24 win over French Camp to start the season, the Stars rolled to a 32-13 win over Winston and then proceeded to win three straight district games, beating Central Holmes (53-19), Benton (39-7) and Indianola (25-15).
“They are on a roll,” NCA coach Rob Roberts said of the Stars. “We are going backwards and they are going forward.”
Newton at Hazlehurst
The Tigers will hit the road this week in a battle of teams looking for their first win of the season.
Hazlehurst is 0-5 but has had some close losses. They lost 19-18 to Lawrence County in the season opener and then fell 34-18 to McComb. After a 44-42 loss to Crystal Springs in overtime, the Indians lost 57-25 to East Central and 28-21 to Wesson last week.
“They are a similar team to us,” Grady said. ‘We just need to go down there and get this one. We really need a win.”
Sumrall at Newton County
The Cougars will play their last non-division game of the season as they host Sumrall on Friday night for homecoming.
The Bobcats are 2-3 on the season and have lost three in a row.
“Just looking at them on film, they are big up front and that’s the strength of their team,” County coach Bobby Bass said. “But this week is going to be more about us. We are going to open up all of our positions. We lost some good football players last week and have to fill those positions.”
It’s an opportunity for some kids to step up and get on the field.”
Morton at Lake
The Hornets will host another Scott County school this week when Class 3A Morton visits Death Valley.
The Panthers are 2-3 on the season and are coming off a 44-30 win over McLaurin last week. They opened the season with a 30-14 win over Newton and then lost three straight to Scott Central (49-0), Newton County (43-7) and East Marion (36-22).
“They are pushing some people around up front,” Lake coach Tate Hanna said. “Their strength is up front. They are getting better every week. They have done a good job of instilling hustle and have got it on the right track. They have improved every week.”
