Several powerlifters throughout Newton County have been named State Champions.
Newton County Girls
The Newton County girls powerlifting team was just one point away from winning the Class 4A state championship.
The Lady Cougars finished just one point behind Quitman in the Class 4A meet on Friday in Jackson.
“These girls have shown me so much this year,” coach Lucas Poole said. “Their dedication is really what impresses me. Most of the girls play other sports, so we have been coming in for the last 3 1/2 months, three days a week at 6 a.m. for workouts. While most people are in bed, they are at the school getting stronger. Success is contagious and that’s why this program has continually improving.”
In the 181-pound web site, Sakiya Wesley took home the championship with a 840-pound total. She had a 340-pound squat, a 125-pound bench press and a 375-pound dead lift.
In the 242-pound weight class, Mackenzie Platt finished with a total of 880 pounds. The junior had a 390-pound squat, a 140-pound bench press and a 350-pound dead lift.
In the 105-pound weight class, Brynleigh Boatner was fourth with a total of 485 pounds. The freshman had a 195-pound squat, a 90-pound bench press and a 200-pound dead lift.
In the 123-pound weight class, Kahlyn finished second with a total of 670 pounds. The junior had a 250-pound squat, a 120-pound bench press and a 300-pound dead lift.
In the 132-pound weight class, Mary Preston Williams finished fourth with a total of 580 pounds. The sophomore had a 230-pound squat, a 90-pound bench press and a 260-pound dead lift.
In the 220-pound weight class, Abigail Gray finished in a tie for third with 785 pounds. Gray had a 340-pound squat, a 130-pound bench press and a 315-pound dead lift.
In the 242-plus pound weight class, Taylor Renfrow finished fourth with a total lift of 820 pounds. The senior had a 330-pound squat, a 145-pound bench press and a 345-pound dead lift.
Union
The Yellowjackets finished second in Class 2A with two individual state champions.
In the 165-pound weight class, Tristan Williamson won first place by 115 pounds. The senior had a 455-pound squat, a 275-pound bench press and a 470-pound dead lift.
Sophomore Jon Perry mashed the competition in the 242-pound weight class with a 1,545-pound total. Perry had a 665-pound squat, a 265-pound bench press and a 615-pound dead lift.
In the 114-pound weight class, Union’s Matthew Sharp finished fourth with a total of 570 pounds. Shard had a 225-pound squat, a 110-pound bench press and a 235-pound dead lift.
In the 148-pound weight class, Drew Sharp finished second with a 1,110-pound total, just 35 pounds out of first place. Sharp had a 435-pound squat, a 230-pound bench press and a 445-pound deadlift.
In the 220-pound weight class, Union’s Jordan Smith finished third with a 1,305-pound total. Smith had a 545-pound squat, a 255-pound bench press and a 505-pound deadlift.
Lake
Lake finished fourth overall in Class 2A with 16 points, behind Water Valley and Scott Central who had 17 points.
In the 114-pound weight class, Jamarious Green finished first with a total of 820 pounds. The sophomore had a 325-pound squat, a 150-pound bench press and a 345-pound dead lift.
In the 148-pound weight class, Jonahvan Hawkins finished fifth overall with a total of 990 points. The junior had a 405-pound squat, a 175-pound bench press and a 410-pound deadlift.
In the 165-pound weight class, Mitez Ickom finished fourth with a total of 1,030 pounds. The sophomore had a 400-pound squat, a 195-pound bench press and a 435-pound dead lift.
In the 220-pound weight class, Logan Stroud finished fifth in the 220-pound weight class with a total of 1,035 pounds. The sophomore had a 425-pound squat, a 215-pound bench press and a 395-pound dead lift.
In the 308-pound weight class, Odarius Hunt finished second with a total of 1,295 pounds. The junior had a 535-pound squat, a 235-pound bench press and a 525-pound dead lift.
On the girls side, Amir Fielder finished fourth in the 165-pound weight class with a total of 615 pounds. The junior had a 265-pound squat, a 95-pound bench press and a 255-pound dead lift.
Newton girls
The Newton girls had two lifters in the Class 2A meet on Friday.
In the 148-pound weight class, Erin Ware finished fourth with a total of 655 pounds. The freshman had a 230-pound squat, a 130-pound bench press and a 295-pound dead lift.
In the 198-pound weight class, Kaleah Rhymes finished fourth with a total of 705 pounds. The freshman had a 325-pound squat, a 105-pound bench press and a 275-pound dead lift.
Sebastopol girls
The Lady Bobcats also had two lifters qualify for the state meet and both came in third in their weight class.
In the 114-pound class, Cyrish Magculang was third with 575 pounds. The senior had a 215-pound squat, a 95-pound bench press and a 265-pound dead lift.
In the 132-pound weight class, Blayze Barnes had a total of 580 pounds. The junior had a 205-pound squat, a 100-pound bench and a 270-pound dead lift.
Newton County boys
Newton County only had one boy qualify for the Class 4A state tournament.
In the 220-pound weight class, Juan Brown finished fourth in his weight class. The junior squatted 510 pounds, bench pressed 305 pounds and dead lifted 500 pounds.
