Basketball: Lady Generals Take Third in South 3A, Advance to State

It was an exciting week for the Newton County Academy Lady Generals at the South 3A state tournament.

After a 35-15 win over Porter’s Chapel, NCA lost 49-47 to River Oaks in the semifinals. NCA bounced back from that loss to beat rival Sylva Bay 46-43.

Basketball: Newton Tigers Fall In 5-2A Finals, Advance To State Tournament

It was a tough night for the Newton Tigers on Friday as they made the short trip to rival Bay Springs for the Division 5-2A championships.

Bay Springs swept both boys and girls championships as the Lady Bulldogs won 45-44 on a game-winner at the buzzer and the Bulldogs won 42-35.

Basketball: Union Girls Take Third In 4-2A, Advance To State Tournament

The Union Lady Yellowjackets advanced to the Class 2A state tournament last week.

After losing 50-28 to Sebastopol in the tournament semifinals, Union beat J.Z. George 38-25 in the consolation game on Friday.

The Union girls advance as the No. 3 seed out of Division 4-2A and were scheduled to play at Walnut on Monday.

Basketball: Cougars Advance In 4-4A, Head To State Tournament

Both Newton County basketball teams advanced out of the Division 4-4A Tournament last week, thanks to wins over Northeast Lauderdale.

The Lady Cougars beat Northeast 33-20 in the semifinals on Thursday before falling to Choctaw Central 63-31 on Friday in the championship game.
