Newton extends curfew to May 5

The City of Newton has extended its nightly curfew in an effort to continue reducing the risk of corona virus to city residents.

The curfew prohibits residents from being out and about between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., with the exception of emergency situations and those heading to work.

Although I’ve never fully thrown myself into the vegetarian/vegan culture, I have, at times, felt bad about the amount of animal protein I consume. I used to feel bad about eating chicken. Then my family bought a few chickens for fresh eggs, and my views changed when I learned chickens are really stupid.

Town of Hickory under curfew

The Town of Hickory will institute a mandatory curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly beginning Thursday, April 2.

City Clerk Joyce Johnson said no one will be allowed to be on the roads during curfew hours except for police officers and emergency services.

“No one but essential vehicles can be out,” she said.

Fan sparks electrical fire on Bay Street last week

Union Fire Department responded to a call on Bay Street last Tuesday where a mobile home had caught fire.

Firefighters worked to remove a portion of the wall to better access the blaze with fire hoses.

Fire Chief Dale Yates said the fire investigator had taken a look at the scene and ruled the incident an electrical fire.
