The Newton basketball teams each managed to pick up a win this week.
The Lady Tigers picked up a big 48-30 win over Philadelphia in division play while falling 59-27 to Neshoba Central.
The Tigers took a 63-59 win over Quitman while dropping a 43-42 decision to Philadelphia and a 70-52 contest to Grace Baptist of Ocean Springs.
Newton has two big division games this week as they host Kemper County on Tuesday and then Lake on Friday.
Newton girls 48, Philadelphia 30
The Lady Tigers used a big second half to pull away and take an 18-point win over the Lady Tornadoes last week in division play.
Philly held a slim 15-13 lead at the end of the first period before Newton outscored the Lady Tornadoes 8-4 in the second period and led 21-19 at the half. Newton pulled away in the second half as they outscored Philly 12-5 in the third and 15-6 in the fourth.
Erin Ware led Newton with 20 points while Jade Qualls and Marianna Thames each had eight points apiece.
Philadelphia boys 43, Newton 42
The Tigers weren’t able to hold onto an early lead and rallied to take a one-point win.
Newton led 10-8 at the end of the end of the first and the game was tied at 16-16 at the half. Philly then outscored Newton 15-11 in the third and led 31-27 going to th4 fourth. Newton outscored Newton 15-12 in the fourth for the final margin.
Tyreke Snow led Newton with 12 points while De’Traun Brown had 11 points. Emmanuel Robinson also had eight points for Newton.
Newton boys 63, Quitman 59
The Tigers started strong in each half and held on to take a four-point win over the Panthers on Monday at East Central.
Newton jumped out to a 23-17 lead in the first period but Quitman outscored the Tigers 13-8 in the second period and trailed 31-30 at the half. Newton used a 14-9 advantage in the third period to lead 45-39 going to the fourth. Quitman rallied and outscored Newton 20-18 in the fourth for the final margin.
Tyreke Snow led Newton with 24 points while Craig Craft had 11 points. Tavion White had eight points while De’Traun Brown added seven points.
Neshoba Central girls 59, Newton 27
The Lady Tigers struggled against the Lady Rockets and fell by 32 points.
Jamiah Jones led Newton with 10 points while Mariana Thames had five points.
Grace Baptist boy 70, Newton 52
Tyreke Snow led Newton with 21 points while Craig Craft had 14 points.
