The Newton County Appeal has named its 2019 All-Area Football Team. The following were named to the All-Area offense.
QB – Brady McGee
5-10, 160, Soph., Lake
McGee burst onto the scene and was the Hornets best offensive player. McGee, who is also a standout in baseball, finished with 1,364 yards passing and had 497 yards rushing on 159 attempts. McGee scored 60 points to lead the Hornets. McGee was a second-team, Division 6-2A selection.
RB – Carlois Walker
5-9, 186, Jr., Newton County
Walker led the resurgence at Newton County as he rushed for 1,845 yards on 242 carries and scored a county-high 138 points as the Cougars advanced to the third round of the Class 4A playoffs. Walker was named a second-team Class 4A all-state selection and was named the Division 5-4A Offensive Most Valuable Player.
RB – Kenyon Clay
6-0, 205, Soph., Union
One of the more talented athletes in the county, Clay led the Yellowjackets with 858 yards rushing on 103 carries and led the team in scoring with 74 points. Clay also threw for 307 yards. Clay was also a Class 2A all-state selection at free safety for the Yellowjackets and a Division 6-2A first-team selection.
WR – Zywon Ledbetter
6-1, 190, Sr., Lake
With McGee leading the Lake offense, Ledbetter had a huge season for the Hornets with 739 receiving yards on 46 catches, while scoring 48 points. Ledbetter also started on defense and had 44 tackles. Ledbetter was named a second-team Class 2A all-state selection and a Division 6-2A first-team selection. Ledbetter has offers from most of the state’s junior colleges along with Jackson State and Alcorn State.
WR – Jamarcus Jones
6-3, 215, Jr., Union
Jones, who stands 6-foot-3, certainly looked the part at wide receiver for the Yellowjackets and led the team with 542 yards receiving on 25 catches. Jones, who is also a standout on the basketball courts, had a solid year on defense as well and was a Division 6-2A first-team selection.
TE – Kalvin Dinkins
6-3, 275, Soph., Lake
Dinkins had a big season for the Hornets and was named to the second-team Class 2A all-state. Dinkins, who stands at 6-foot-3, 275 pounds, was also a force on the defensive line for the Hornets as well with 32 tackles.
TE – Tyshun Evans
6-4, 245, Soph., Newton
Evans was one of the bright spots for the Tigers on offense this season as he led the team in scoring with 26 points and had 23 catches for 232 yards. Evans was a Division 6-2A first-team selection for the Tigers as well.
OL – Tim Norris
6-1, 245, Sr., Lake
Norris was an all-district selection for the Hornets and anchored the offensive line for Lake, grading out at 70. Norris has interest from several of the state’s junior colleges. Norris was a Division 6-2A first-team selection. For the Hornets. Norris has several junior college offers to play next year.
OL – Dustin Welborn
5-11, 200, Sr., Union
While not the biggest member of Union’s offensive line, head coach Brad Breland said Welborn was his most consistent, grading out in the high 80s. Welborn was a Division 6-2A first-team selection for the Yellowjackets.
OL – Jacob Moore
6-1, 275, Jr., Union
Moore returns to the all-county team and is also a repeat member of The Meridan’s Star’s Premier Preps of East Mississippi. Moore, graded out in the high 80s and is also a two-time state champion powerlifter for Union. Moore was also a Class 2A All-state selection and a Division 6-2A first-team selection.
OL – Chris McGee
6-3, 235, Jr., Newton County
McGee was the Cougars best and most consistent offensive lineman this past season, helping the Cougars rush for more than 2,000 yards and make the third round of the Class 4A playoffs.. McGee was named to the District 5-4A Super 22 team for the Cougars.
OL – Trey Terrell
6-2, 255, Sr., Newton County Academy
Terrell was the Generals best offensive lineman this season and also had a solid season on defense. Coach Rob Roberts said the Generals ran behind Terrill most of the season. The senior was also solid on defense, as he recorded 54 tackles for the Generals and was an all-District selection.
ATH – Tyreke Snow
5-10, 160, Fresh., Newton
Snow is the only freshman to make the squad and was one of he few bright spots for the Tigers, as he threw for 1,330 yards and 10 TDs and also rushed for 289 yards. Snow was a Division 6-2A first-team selection
ATH – Colby Ferguson
5-10, 170, Sr., Union
Ferguson, the defending Newton County Appeal Player of the Year, had another solid season with 838 yards passing and 14 touchdowns while rushing for 447 yards on 97 carries. Ferguson was a Division 6-2A second-team selection for the Yellowjackets.
K – Lee Hill
5-10, 150, Jr., Newton County
In his first year in football, Hill showed why coach Bobby Bass put so much trust in him, hitting 25-of-29 PATs and making 8-of-11 field goals and scoring 55 points. Hill was named the Division 5-4A Most Valuable kicker.
