The following players have been named Players of the Week by the Newton County Appeal. They were nominated by local coaches based on their performances in the Week 1 games.
Lake: Johnny Johnson
The senior linebacker had 9 1/2 tackles to lead the Lake defense that held Forest to just 73 yards of total offense. The Lake defense also scored the game-winning safety and blocked a kick in the last minute to preserve a 14-13 win over Forest.
Newton: J’Alex Hardy
Hardy had two interceptions and eight tackles in Newton’s 30-14 loss to Morton.
NCA: Eli Finnegan
The senior running back rushed for 213 yards on eight carries and scored three TDs and also had a 71-yard fumble recovery for a TD. He also recorded six tackles on defense in a 54-7 win over Porter’s Chapel.
Union: Trevor Patchin
Had two catches for 44 yards and a 34-yard touchdown catch on offense. Patchin also had 2.5 tackles and an interception on defense in a 42-21 win over Choctaw Central.
Newton County: Carlois Walker
Ran for a career high 196 yards on 27 carries and scored two touchdowns in a 35-14 win over Leake Central.
