On January 14, 2023, Union High School held their annual cheer and football banquet. Usually, the cheer and football banquet is held in May, but this year, the coaches decided to do it earlier in order to take some stress off of people during the months of April and May. The cheer and football banquet was held at Castle Grove Plantation in Collinsville, Mississippi. Both teams had an amazing season, and all of the athletes were recognized. The cheer coach Annalyse Shoemaker gave out many awards to the cheerleaders. The cheerleading awards are: All Around Best Cheerleader: Julia Harrison; Leadership: Lauryn Roebuck and Sydney Coward; Most Reliable: Heidi Strickland; Spirit: Kamryn Robinson; Best Teammate: Makenlee Yeager; and the Yellowjacket Award: Albany Winstead. Also, all of the cheerleaders received the scholar athlete award and their yearly lettermen’s. The head football coach Jordan Wren also gave out numerous awards to his players. The football awards are: Super 22 Offense: Ky’yon Harris, Michael Gibson, Keon Hutchins, and Xavier Boler; Super 22 Defense: Tristan Wallace, Carlos Hickmon, and Cameron Jackson; First Team: Bug Hickmon, Tank Haralson, Kale Grayson, Jaylin Rogers, Davarian McDonald, Collin Rigdon, Hayden Dolan, and Blane Cooper; Second Team: Matthew Lott, Mason Tucker, Vaiden Bouder, Omarri Holliday, Samuel Alawine, Germaine Pickens, and Jacob Weeks; Team Counsel: Ky’yon Harris, Jaylin Rogers, Blane Cooper, Matthew Lott, and Cameron Jackson; All-State: William Hughlett and Carlos Hickmon; Yellowjacket Award: Cameron Jackson and Matthew Lott; Courageous Award; Brylen Edmonson; Most Humble Award: Brandon Killen; and the ERO Award: Bankston Rush. Both of these teams made history for Union High School this year. The football team is the district champion for the 2022 season, and the cheerleading team is the fourth best team in the state. Both of these teams deserve congratulations and recognition! Go, Jackets, Go!
