It was a busy week for Union athletics with baseball, softball and tennis all in action.
In softball, Union won three out of four games, including a sweep of J.Z. George in division play.
In baseball, Union split a pair of games to open division play with Eupora.
The Union tennis team took a 4-3 win over Forest.
Union softball
The Union softball team won three out of four games last week. After falling 7-3 to Clarkdale, Union swept J.Z. George 18-0 and 18-3 on Thursday and then beat Southeast Lauderdale 10-6 on Friday.
On Monday, Union fell 7-3 to Clarkdale. The Lady Yellowjackets trailed 7-0 and scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Union had nine hits, led by Tiara Campbell who was 3-for-3 with a double. Landrey Hanna was 2-for-4 as well. Aubrie Coleman started in the circle and pitched 2 1/3 innings while Alanee Wheeler pitched two innings and Raleigh Dickerson pitched 2 2/3 innings to finish the game.
On Thursday, Union swept a doubleheader from J.Z. George, winning 18-0 in the first game and 18-3 in the second. Union had 21 hits and scored eight in the first, six in the second and four in the third. Destiny Moulds, Landrey Hanna, Abigail Cleveland and Ryanne Oliver were each 2-for-2. Cleveland, Aubrie Coleman, Alanee Wheeler, Oliver, Tiara Campbell and Zoie Strickland each doubled while Raleigh Dickerson had a triple. Cleveland pitched all three innings and gave up just one walk and no hits.
In the second game on Thursday, Union scored six in the first, three in the second and nine in the third. Union had 19 hits in the game, led by Raleigh Dickerson who was 4-for-4 with five RBIs while LaCee Bishop was 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs. Zoie Strickland, Tiara Campbell, Landrey Hanna and Abigail Cleveland each had two hits. Aspen Lovern started and gave up three runs while Dickerson pitched the last three innings and got the win, giving up just one hit while striking out seven.
On Friday, beat Southeast Lauderdale 10-6. Union scored four in the first, three in the fourth and finished with one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Union had 14 hits, led by Tiara Campbell who was 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs. Marquesha Davis was 3-for-4 while Raleigh Dickerson was 2-for-3. Alanee Wheeler was also 2-for-4 and also pitched all seven innings and gave up six runs on 12 hits while striking out four.
Union baseball
On Monday, Union rallied to take a 7-6 division win over Eupora. Union trailed 4-0 but scored two in the third, four in the fifth and scored the game winner in the bottom of the sixth. Union had just four hits in the contest as Tanner Watkins singled and drove in three runs. Kooper Fultz also singled and scored three runs. Fultz started on the mound and pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving uproar runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three. Watkins pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out two.
On Friday, Eupora rebounded and beat Union 17-1. Eupora scored 13 runs in the second inning to take control of the game. Union had just one hit, a double by Kooper Fultz who also scored Union’s only run. Jacob Freeman started on the mound and pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up 10 runs on three hits and six walks. Rafe Manning and J.T. Cook also pitched for the Yellowjackets.
The Yellowjackets are scheduled to play Newton County on Monday at 11 a.m. and Southeast Lauderdale on Tuesday a 1:30 p.m.
Union tennis
The Yellowjackets took a tough 4-3 win over Forest with the help of two third-set tiebreakers. In girls doubles, Julia Harrison and Ava Smith won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Ceclia Burroughs and Hannah Pullin won 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 at the No. 2 spot. Levi Ferguson and Ashton Wilcher won 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 at the No. 2 boys spot while Ethan Brasher and Denver McCoy won 6-0, 6-1 at the mixed spot. In singles, Cory Smith lost 1-6, 7-6 (5), 11-9 while Zoey Leach lost 6-1, 6-0. In boys No. 1 doubles, Cooper Capps and Jude Feasel lost 6-7 (6), 6-3, 10-8.
