Students and teachers at Union Middle School may find the internet running faster after the Board of Trustees approved upgrades to the school’s wireless system.
In a special called meeting Monday, the board approved a $55,464 bid from Shots Computers to upgrade the wiring at the middle school.
The district plans to pay for the project from E-rate funds, a federal fund under the Federal Communications Commission aimed at helping schools and libraries with telecommunications and internet connectivity projects.
Superintendent Tyler Hansford told the board the project would involve replacing wireless access points, upgrading existing wiring and installing new modems.
“It’s an upgrade on bandwidth,” he said.
Trustee Chad Brasher said the project description showed a lot of work being done to move Union Middle School’s connectivity forward.
“It looks like a pretty big project,” he said. “A lot of stuff.”
In other business, the Board of Trustees:
•Accepted a letter of resignation from Coach Brad Breland, who previously announced he would be leaving the district after 19 years; and
•Approved adding an additional screener tool for testing students referred to the gifted program.
