In a relatively short, routine meeting, the Union Board of Aldermen covered just a few items in the February meeting last Tuesday.
They appointed Johnny Slaughter to a five-year term on the Board of the Union Special Municipal School District.
Slaughter’s term will bring him to the policy making body with Jeremy Hamm, Shirley Walton, Dr. Nicole Harrison, and Sommer Warren.
“I really am honored,” he said, “And, I appreciate that I’ll have this opportunity to work with our outstanding school system.”
Slaughter is a 1975 UHS graduate and spent 29 years in the Newton County school system as a coach and teacher. He spent 30-plus years coaching high school boys’ basketball.
In other actions during the brief meeting, the Aldermen:
• Took no action on a request from Tena Seals that the city help alleviate erosion on her property at 714 South Decatur St.
She contends that the creek which runs between her property and the city’s comes out of its banks during rainy periods and is washing away the fill that they brought in to prepare a place for their newly built home.
Union Water Department head Jonathan Ferguson said there would be problems if anyone wanted to alter the natural course of the creek. It is under the jurisdiction of the Pat Harrison Waterway District, “She has erosion problems, but that is what happens when you build next to a creek,” he said.
Mrs. Seals said she had talked to the water way district and other state agencies. “They told me that this was an issue for the city,” she said.
Mayor Wayne Welch said he didn’t think that the city was responsible for any improvements, but after hearing Mrs. Seal’s request he said he would investigate the issues with state agencies. “We’ll see what we find out and I’ll get in touch with you,” he said.
• Hired Rex Branning to oversee the city’s summer recreation leagues.
• Heard report from Welch saying he expected to be able to advertise for bids next month for the resurfacing of North Street,
