Union residents paying their water bills or visiting City Hall will see a new face behind the desk after the Board of Aldermen voted to hire Tammy Kay Ferguson as the new City Clerk.
After City Clerk Cheryl Chaney announced she would be retiring, the Board of Aldermen received nine applications for her replacement. Last week the board and Mayor Wayne Welch conducted initial interviews with seven of the applicants and chose their top three.
In a special called meeting Monday, the board interviewed the three finalists in executive session before making the motion to hire Ferguson.
Chaney, who has served as City Clerk for more than 32 years, will step down June 30, and Ferguson will take her place.
Welch said he would be meeting with Ferguson in the next few days to finalize the details and begin her training.
Also on Monday, the Board of Aldermen took precautionary action against the Covid-19 pandemic. Chaney told the board the county had declared a state of emergency and suggested the city do the same.
“If there’s anything you have happen to you, you get money if there’s available money,” she said.
Mayor Welch said he would also like to suspend the city’s youth recreation practice until school was back in session.
“You’d hate for something to happen and then say if we hadn’t been practicing ball it wouldn’t have happened,” he said.
The board also voted to suspend rentals of the Union Community Center until further notice. Chaney said she would reach out to the groups already booked on the calendar and let them know other arrangements would need to be made.
