Union Public School trustees said goodbye to a familiar face Monday as Trustee Chad Brasher’s term on the board came to an end.
Superintendent Tyler Hansford said the district presented Brasher with a plaque Monday to recognize his dedication and service to the schools.
“I’m going to miss Chad,” He said. “He’s been an exemplary board member.”
The Union Board of Aldermen previously appointed Jeremy Slaughter, a 1975 graduate of Union High School, to a 5-year term filling Brasher’s seat on the school board.
Monday may have been Brasher’s last regular board meeting, Hansford said, but there is a chance of a special called meeting. The district, he said, is getting close to naming a new head football coach.
“We’ll have a special called meeting, hopefully next week or the week after to name a new head football coach,” he said, Friday.
Brad Breland led the Yellowjackets for 19 seasons before announcing he would be stepping down as head coach. Hansford said the district had no shortage of applicants and is getting close to naming Breland’s replacement.
“We were blessed with 44 applicants,” he said, “People from out of state and local people.”
Hansford said district staff met with ten applicants last week and had narrowed the list down to four finalists. After taking time over the weekend to process the interviews and collect their thoughts, he said the board could be ready to name a new coach as soon as this week.
One other staffing concern remains as the Board of Trustees accepted Union High School principal Lee Killen’s resignation in a special called meeting February 4. Killen, who previously worked as principal of Union Middle School, will remain with the district through the end of the school year.
Hansford said the district has begun the process of advertising for the position, hoping to attract a good number of applicants before the end of the year. With luck, he said, a new High School principal could be named as early as April.
