Project to be completed in April 2022, will cost $3.4 million
The repaving of Hwy. 15 from Decatur to just south of Union was slated to begin Tuesday, July 6, after the Mississippi Department of Transportation granted approval to begin work June 29.
Michael Flood, spokesman for MDOT, said the project will be completed in April 2022, but they plan to take care of the portion in front of Newton County Elementary School first.
“The construction company is planning to complete the portion in Decatur in front of the elementary school completed before school starts back,” Flood said.
According to the Newton County School District calendar, the first day of school for students is Aug. 5.
The Mississippi Transportation Commission awarded June 8 a $3.4 million contract to W.E. Blaine & Sons, Inc., for a mill and overlay of eight miles of Hwy. 15. The project will go from Decatur to Henry Mack Smith Road. It will pick up where the last project stopped just south of downtown Decatur.
Signage began appearing in Decatur as early as Tuesday morning. One lane of traffic will be closed at a time while workers are completing each segment of the resurfacing project.
