Police still guarding suspect at hospital
The presumed suspect who was allegedly responsible for the July 17 deadly shooting on Pine Street is still in the hospital.
Newton Police Chief Randy Patrick said the injured person has still been in the hospital since being airlifted on the night of the shooting.
“He is still in the hospital in stable condition,” Patrick said. “We still have not charged the suspect at this time.”
Patrick said the call came in at 9:34 p.m. Saturday, July 17, for shots fired on Pine Street, which is located near Wade Park in Newton. During a July 20 meeting with the Newton Board of Mayor and Aldermen, he said as many as 200 people were on the street when police arrived.
Officers found one person dead with multiple gunshot wounds along with the person of interest with serious gunshot injuries.
Patrick did confirm the identity of the victim as Calvin Nettles. He was still not able to comment on the status of the investigation as it is being investigated the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
During the meeting last week, Patrick confirmed that he has an officer staying with the suspect 24 hours a day until he is released from the hospital.
Patrick asked anyone with knowledge of this incident to contact the Newton Police Department at 601-683-2043. If you call after hours, 911 dispatchers will connect you with an officer.
