Nancy Moore was named the “Citizen of the year” by the Union Chamber of Commerce.
She was chosen for this title in part due to her connection with Boler’s Inn located in Union.
Moore helps to oversee the upkeep of the inn as well as giving guided tours through the inn.
“I think it’s really important for kids and young people to know the historical significance of the house,” Moore said.
Boler’s Inn gained historical significance during the Civil War. Gen. Sherman and his men stayed in and around the inn during their time in Newton County. The inn is now closed to overnight guests, but it is now an official historical landmark and is open for guided tours.
Originally from DeKalb, Moore became musically inclined at a young age.
“I played the saxophone in the school band,” Moore said. “I also took voice, piano and dance lessons for a while.”
Upon graduating from high school, Moore decided to further her education by attending East Mississippi Community College. Once she finished her time at EMCC, Moore went on to attend the University of Southern Mississippi where she got a bachelor’s degree in interior design.
She went on to get her first job out of college at a furniture store in Meridian. Moore credits her love of being around people for her choice in career. She also credits her mom and grandmother as being her biggest inspirations as an interior designer. “My mom and grandma always loved flowers.”
Moore is tied to the community in many other ways. She is a member of the Union Home and Garden Club, the Present Day Club and is a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Union.
In 1990, Moore married her husband, Jim. “I actually met him while I was working,” Moore said.
She and her husband reside in Decatur. Moore said her favorite thing about living in a small town is that everybody knows everybody. “When you’re walking down the street, you are bound to see someone you know.”
In her spare time, Moore said she enjoys antiquing and traveling with her husband.
“I’ve been to all of the states except Alaska and Hawaii,” Moore said.
She went on to say that she has been to Switzerland, Scotland, Germany and several other countries.
“I loved being in Switzerland. The mountains were beautiful, and the streets were so clean.”
With her vast knowledge and experience in many different areas, Moore said that this is the advice she would give to anyone who asked:
“I would tell you to always be true to yourself. Be proud of who and what you are.”
