Power lines falling on a stop sign ignited a gas line fire on Dec. 18, and caused power outages in the area.
Around 6 p.m. Dec. 18, a tree fell on power lines near the intersection of Gum and Walnut streets west of downtown Union.
The downed lines made contact with a stop sign on the southwestern corner of the intersection, electrified the sign, ruptured the gas line and caused a fire that burned through the night into the early part of Dec. 19.
Officials on the scene said first responders including Union Police, Fire and Street Departments, County Line Fire Department, Newton County Emergency Management, Mississippi Power and Centerpoint Energy responded to the call.
Fire officials remained on the scene spraying water on a fire hydrant near the fire so that it didn’t explode until Centerpoint Energy dug up the gas line and repaired it.
No one was injured in the incident.
