Several new employees were hired with the Newton Municipal School District to help targeted groups of elementary students improve their achievement.
Two of the teachers are Kia Roger sand Shevette Lindsey, and they were hired through a program with Mississippi State University that allows those with at least an associate’s degree to help tutor students who lack specific important skills or are underperforming in certain areas.
“We help tutor students about two hours a week,” Rogers said. “It is mostly in small-group settings. And our job is to help these students get on track.”
Lindsey said it is open to anyone with an associate’s degree and can pass the WorkKeys Testing.
“We mostly work with students who have some deficiencies in certain areas, and our job is to help bring them up to the level to where they should be,” Lindsey said. “It’s very rewarding when you see that you’re making a difference in these students’ lives.”
Superintendent Nola Bryant said these teachers play a key role in the development of the students lives, but they help promote community service projects. One that was held before Christmas was the Coats for Tigers campaign, which was seeking new and lightly worn coats of all sizes for students in all grades.
“They are involved in other community service projects as well throughout the year,” Bryant said. “This a two-year program, and we are proud to be participating in it.”
