A former Newton Police officer and Newton County Sheriff’s deputy was involved in a crash early morning Sept. 2 in Jasper County while responding to a call.
Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson confirmed that Deputy Damian Blackmon was involved in a single-vehicle crash while responding to an “early morning disturbance” call on Wednesday morning. Blackmon’s vehicle left the road and hit a tree, Johnson said. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Laurel and then airlifted to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.
“I talked to his wife yesterday, and she said he came through the surgery well,” Johnson said Thursday. “We are still concerned about him, and we’re praying for him.”
Johnson said they are not certain what happened to cause the vehicle to leave the roadway. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and there were no other injuries.
On Sunday, Johnson posted on Facebook that Blackmon appears to be making slow but steady progress.
“Once again, your prayers are working! Deputy Blackmon, his family, and his “blue” family appreciate your concern and prayers more than you know.”
Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
